  • Success Strategies for Creative Souls #99: Creative Rollercoasters

It has rained here almost the entire month of June. I've been at the Cape where my favorite beach beckons and I've only been there for one cold hour. But despite the grayness, I've been especially happy this month.

For several years, I have had this vision to create a new product about creative courage. In my mind, it's had several incarnations and formats. At first, it was an actual card deck, then it was a tool kit of sorts, but now it's an e-book - but a beautiful e-book called Creativity Courage Cards.

I wanted to use my original quotes and photographs by my husband and put them together to create an engaging and inspirational guide to help you to stay brave during the creative process, despite all the obstacles. In the steps of writing and rewriting and resizing photo's, and moving pages around so that they flow, I was entranced. After each edit or change, I kept getting clarity about what I wanted you, the reader, to experience. It was an exciting and magical series of moments.

Everytime Barbara, my VA, sent me an updated version, I couldn't wait to open the file and print it out again and see the results. We finally got it to the place of perfection that we wanted. Barbara and my husband both contributed ideas for changes, but I was committed to a particular look and feel and I kept redoing it until I discovered it. While this all took many hours and lots of paper, I loved the time and effort. It was joyful and fulfilling. It reminded me of the creation of all of my books and products and how absorbing they become while you are immersed in bringing vision to reality. When you are passionate about what you are doing, you can be so focused.

In fact, I ended up creating another e-book called The Path to Creative Success at the same time. I found the best photo for the cover and put together some of my favorite tips for building a life of creativity and fulfillment. Working on both of these at the same time made everyday an adventure. Did it take courage? Yes, as it kept changing, but I honored my own words and pushed through the chatter of doubt.

Then we hit a snag. When all the files were combined, the sizing changed and we were all getting different sizes on our computers and we got stuck and called in the guru's to take a look and figure it all out. It was hard for me, frustrating for Barbara, and my husband consulted with two photo buddies for additional ideas.

As of this writing, we're almost there. But I had hoped to have these 2 e-books ready for you by today. This is such a reminder that the creative process has it's own time table and generally does not evolve seamlessly. So my "up" of the past few weeks turned into a "downer" as the details were confusing and involved unexpected decisions.

This is where many creative people loose their nerve. They get one rejection and quit, one person criticizes their work and they cower, or they get stuck in a plot that makes no sense. These wild rides are usually inevitable and require determination and a creative problem-solving spirit to resolve, despite the uncomfortable feelings. So stay tuned, our e-books will emerge soon and that will be a special moment.
