  • Success Strategies for Creative Souls#78: Restore Inner Balance this Summer

Ah, the fantasy of summer with time off and lots of leisurely thoughts and activities. Yet research shows that in this 24/7 world, people are taking shorter vacations and stayed wired up to work and not relaxing. Too much stress is a creativity choker. Your inner peace and connection with your internal whims and spontaneity allow you to recreate the landscape of your mind and invent the new. Here are some tips to cultivate your tranquility and make your creativity a priority this summer:

*Actively clear time on your calendar for the very best creativity enriching experience you can imagine. Do you need a weekend alone or an interactive workshop with diverse people or simply time to play with your creative projects?

*Do a stress inventory for a week and see what is draining off your psychic energy and try my 3-part Positive Choices model of proactively trying to avoid, modify, or learn to cope with whatever stress is stealing your serenity. Resolving the issues will set you free.

*As a child, most of us loved the summer for the freedom we had to have adventures and commune with Mother Nature or the arts or sports or family. What does your heart long to have the pleasure of this summer? Make it happen.

*Set aside some time for silence--quiet time to listen to your own thoughts and firewall out the outside world. My clients are all telling me that they long for inner peace and an escape from all the external noise and information that descends upon us daily. Give yourself that essential restoration time on a regular basis this summer.

*Review your life path at the moment. Are you heading in the direction that you desire or are you lost on a side trail? Recommit to the path you want to be on and light your way back to it. I have one client now who wants to start a design business and another client who hates having her own landscape business and she wants to get a job. Tell the truth about what you want now. Change is scary but ever-present and beckons us to heed its callings.

    Spiritual Travel

At my favorite health food store on Cape Cod, I discovered a gem of a book called A Woman's Path: Women's Best Spiritual Travel Writing which is a profound collection of vignettes by authors such as Anne Lamott, Maya Angelou, Natalie Goldbeg, and many earnest others about their spiritual insights while in foreign lands. It is a book I will re-read many times over.

    The Seduction of Hospice
My novelist friend Anne LeClaire, also from the Cape, has a provocative new novel called The Lavender Hour which is the story of a young woman who does hair art who moves to the Cape and volunteers as a hospice worker. As always, Anne weaves together a tale of strong emotions, engaging characters, and life challenges. This book is brand new and promises to become one that is talked about for a long time to come. http://www.annele claire.com
