Creative Success Strategy#45: Try on a Global Mindset

This week I was in Hartford, CT, at Trinity College, at my niece's graduation. It was a chilly day as we all sat huddled in chairs on the grass under the lovely old elm trees and listened to the impressive array of awards and thoughtful speeches. Tom Chappell of Tom's of Maine was honored for his work as a humane business owner and leader. I met him long ago while he was completing his divinity degree while still running his company and actively involved in the socially responsible business initiative. There were students honored for local social action work in Hartford as well for international projects involving film, scientific research, women's rights, and healthcare, among others.

Corporate accountability champion, John H.Biggs, the Commencement speaker, zeroed in on the concept of globalization as the most important concept of our time. He encouraged students to live abroad, accept that some kind of impersonal services will surely be outsourced, like radiology readings, while personal services, such as a meeting with a doctor, need to stay personal. With the Internet as our communication network, he urged us to all think of how our own businesses/professions will be impacted by the global economy and what can be packaged and delivered over the web in new and improved ways.

As with the Industrial Revolution, globalization is an invitation for innovation and change and many old business and communication models will be lost forever. He cited an economic study that calculated a $9,000 a year benefit from globalization to every American family. Yet, he also called for the development of a safety net for those who are affected by "the China price" too.

Biggs encouraged each student to become a "global competitor" and to read The World is Flat by Tom Friedman and The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy by Pietra Rivoli.

    Inquiry for You:
Think about how a global mindset impacts your life and your business. What new markets might be good joint ventures to pursue? How can you create products that are available to an international audience? What modes of technology can you leverage to reach a wider audience and deliver better results? How many ways can you create a connection with your target market and better serve their current needs? While there are many losses, like trying to talk to a live person in customer service who speaks English, globalization is happening and embrace it we must. Our first task is to learn about other cultures and ponder possibilities to join together. Travel can be a wonderful venue for sparking the imagination and having an intimate experience with a broader view.

When travel is not an option, surfing the Net, reading, and inviting diverse people into our lives can be a great education. Museums, lectures, and cross-cultural events all stir this new perspective. So this month, engage in a global activity or contemplation, and look for the silver to be mined, personally and professionally.
