Success Strategy #34:  Investing in Your Creative and Professional Development

I've had a number of clients this past month who have specific, heart-felt goals relating to completing a creative project, growing their business, or trying to get a promotion. In each case, it has been difficult for them to allocate the time and the financial resources necessary to be successful.  Mary (none of these names are real) is writing a screenplay but needs a new computer, a back-up system, and a writing group. Bob wants to double his business this year but has his overly busy sister-in-law doing his marketing materials, won't pay the membership fees for two great networking groups for his niche, and still doesn't have unlimited phone service on his telephone so he can market nationally. Sarah wants to become the manager of her division but won't pay for an executive training program in her industry, join Toastmasters to improve her presentation skills, or update her wardrobe to look managerial, as the managers at her company still wear expensive suits. Lastly, Ross is a photographer and keeps trying to reproduce his aerial photos on inferior paper. All four of these folks are sabotaging their success by not investing in their future by developing and showcasing their excellence. In the old career world, if we were employed at a large company, we might have been able to expect that we would be given a mentor, an educational budget, and lots of career development support. In this new portfolio/free agent environment and as an entrepreneur, you are in charge of your professional development. One of the reasons people hire me as a coach is to help them design and implement a success plan which will leverage their creativity, use their best skills, and fix their roadblocks--internal and external. In order to truly invest in your professional development, consider the following:

  1. Do I have the right equipment/materials/software/support system to achieve a high standard of work? Don't waste your valuable time using machines or contractors that don't work or reflect poorly on your business. Using sub-standard paper, paints, or packaging signals your lack of belief in the value of your work. What kind of training or professional development info/support do you need? Hiring professionals to help you, independently paying for training or coaching, or looking for a new job are often tax deductible.  Research your options. In addition, if you learn what you need to know, you will most likely increase your business revenue or salary, and more than pay yourself back for the investment. As opposed to denying that your professional growth will personally cost you money and time, develop a budget and a time commitment schedule to honor what you are trying to accomplish. Be innovative about how you accomplish your goals. Barter services with another professional, reduce other non-essential expenses, volunteer your time in exchange for training or materials, or accept that to get ahead, you need to allocate funds and do it!
  2. Ask yourself this question: If I truly believed in my abilities and the value of my work, how would I do things differently? If you want to be successful, you have to discover and then implement new actions. And if you don't know what those are, you need to ask for support.
